New Report Finds Massive Drop in Road Fatalities Since 2005 » INFRASTRUCTURIST:
That’s the basic conclusion of an exhaustive analysis of recent traffic fatalities published in this month’s issue of the journal Traffic Injury Prevention by Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle, researchers at University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. Sivak and Schoettle analyzed data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which they call “a census of all U.S. crashes that involve a fatality,” over the period of 2005 to 2008, the most recent year on record. Their findings show that for a variety of reasons—from improved car technology to better laws to the economic downturn—traffic-related deaths have dramatically declined during that span.
