The Inimitable Tiff

The online adventures of Tiff Fehr (@tiffehr), a UX engineerette at The New York Times. Feel free to peruse my somewhat popular geek-themed Tumblr, too, if that's your thing.

More personally than the above or below, I document notable adventures (much later than when they actually happen): Oktoberfest '04, Guatemala '08, Europe '10, Wisconsin '10, Middle East '11*. (* in progress)

10 Ways Generation Y Will Change the Workplace (Employee Evolution)

  1. We’ll Hold Only Productive Meetings
  2. We’ll Shorten the Work Day
  3. We’ll Bring Back the Administrative Assistants [sic]
  4. We’ll Redefine Retirement
  5. We’ll Find Real Mentors
  6. We’ll Restore Respect to the HR Department
  7. We’ll Promote Based on Emotional Intelligence
  8. We’ll Continue to Value What Our Parents Have to Offer
  9. We’ll Enjoy Higher Starting Salaries
  10. We’ll Re-invent the Performance Review

Okay, here’s the thee things that irritate me about this list:

  1. Do Gen Y self-appointed mouthpieces really think no older people thought this list would be nice things to have or do? Or that these demands aren’t resting on the back of a lot of hard-won groundwork laid by others? Drop the exceptionalist back-patting and have some empathy for the challenges overcome by previous workers.
  2. I have to stop reading anything by the Ryans on EE or Brazen Careerist. They used to be interesting, but now it’s too self-congratulatory to be anything but not-really-representational bombast.
  3. Administrative assitants—yeah, somebody’s been watching to much “Mad Men”.
