I adore Old Weather, though I don’t “play” enough. My affection stems from one of my favorite books in the last few years, This Thing of Darkness (or To the Edge of the World), by Harry Thompson. It’s the historically fictionalized account of the Beagle, before and during Darwin’s inclusion in the crew as they surveyed Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, then around Cape Horn to the Galapagos. It’s an amazing book. The central figure, the captain FitzRoy, in the later stages of his career begins the practice of weather prediction. Old Weather—composed of ships following on the Beagle’s exploration and survey spirit—is right up my alley.
