Women’s participation in the tech industry peaked in the early ’80s. It’s trended down from then but there’s a spike within current students perhaps due to social networking.
This graph builds on the rise in current students hasn’t yet translated to an increase in candidates for this company’s rough survey. But I’d be more interested to learn why there’s a strong drop-off for female candidates between the code and phone steps. That would provide a lot more context than expecting a general increase in female students to show up in intern hiring.
To their credit, Fog Creek says they don’t plan to sit around waiting for a rise in female applicants. They’re starting with understanding the background and experience of their token female engineer intern. I wish they’d take that perspective and critique their hiring practices, for when those hoards of women show up.
